I was recently reading an interesting blog that discussed by-products. Specifically, the way in which companies have turned waste material into a valuable income stream. Saw mills and woodchips I believe was their example. And so, the analogy lead to how we software focused companies could do likewise. I actually learnt quite a lesson! And potentially a valuable one. And I have been in this business (of ICT) a long time.
Our software by-products are less tangible. With a little thought I realised that some waste might be code snippets, prototypes, and work negotiated off a client feature list. Well I recently created a product review for a large company. The story is complicated, but I ended up presenting my document to Nokia (the Qt Software people) here in Brisbane. I had originally hoped to be doing something similar in Oslo, but we can’t always get what we wish for ;-( . So this is my by-product that I shall not be wasting.
I attach the PDF document here as a sample of the work we can do under our Software Services banner. It is a typical ‘site review’ that we did with only a day slot available, so I was particularly pleased with the (IMHO) valuable list of issues that were presented. It is not often that a huge company gets its sites into a position where us small fry can actually say much, other than WOW. As you will know from my last Symbian project, although I knock Nokia (it came out that way ;-) ), I am in awe of this company and just love their clever technology and insightful self marketing strategies.

Hopefully any prospective client out there will be appreciative of our green credentials too ;-)
