Well in my last post I was struggling with JavaFX. I’m still not impressed with a missing construct that I would have in Groovy. Well I am fussy. Yes but not just that, I was going through the first 12 hours of torment with a new language. That’s now over. And it was then that I tried the graphics.
Programming in Groovy and JavaFX is not so dissimilar. After a little reading and some practice, the visual elements of JavaFX really came into their own. I was starting to worry that my development project was going to be all brains and no beauty. Well graphics is certainly JavaFX’s forte.
With a little play I created a mock version of my application. Well, I’m no longer sure if it’s an “is or was” being created in Groovy! Why the change of heart? My groovy application is looking very much like an old style Swing affair – boring tabbed panes – read as “ugly as sin”. Microsoft has taught us all that eye candy is what the customers want. Technology is nowhere in the average paying customers mindset.
So, with a little JavaFX magic, the mockup has some sparkle. Splash screen with effects, major tab options via buttons, also with effects. It’s a good way to end the weekend. This is what a little play produced.

Damn, this post was popular! My most read entry within 24 hours. Maybe I should be thanking Chhandomay Mandal (Senior Marketing Manager at Sun Microsystems)!
He most kindly read and thought me worthy of reporting on – high praise indeed
