Food in Brisbane, Hong Kong style

January 10, 2009 · 1 Comment

It dawned on me that I had a lot to say about eating out in Bangalore, but have not been sharing my Australian culinary experiences. This weekend we were treated to good food Hong Kong style at The Manor Chinese Restaurant (The Glen Shopping Village, 6 Angel Street, Corner Gaskell Street & Angel Street, Eight Mile Plains, 4113 – [07] 3341 9506 ).

We were very impressed by the 3 course Peking Duck option. The “wrap your own” starter we had not enjoyed since living in the UK a few years back, and boy had we missed it.  I will also recommend the spicy jelly fish which until now I had only tried Vietnamese style. If you are from Brisbane, I believe the place is owned by the same people who run Cafe Mi in Sunnybank.

Ok, my tummy feels good, earlier my taste buds were even happier. Hope you enjoy :-)

Actually, I must say as this sort of thing has been bugging me, though I can find them on-line (sort of) by entries in local directories, they like many other places are just not represented on the web! I can’t believe that businesses are not taking advantage of the fact that a lot of well healed customers like to check out a restaurant on-line. Yes, a picture of the place (it looked very nice), a menu (both for seated and takeaway) and of course some pictures of the best dishes! Australia, or should I say Brisbane, seems to be a backwater when it comes to business on the web! Are the web companies offering such poor service or do the businesses not see the value? I’d really like to know the answer!

India – winding up

November 19, 2008 · 1 Comment

Announcement: before I get overwhelmed with preparations, I will confirm that we fly out of Bangalore this coming Friday 21st November. This means that until the 6th December, when we arrive back in Australia, Alex will be busy doing Japan :-)

This evening we dined in style with the guys from INTEC Bangalore.

This is us sat at Ruchi’s (18/1 Cambridge Road, Ulsoor, Bangalore – 560 008 Phone: 41320435), which also served commendably as our local takeaway. We indulged in many more curries than I can now possibly name or remember. A great way for us to say goodbye to southern Indian cuisine.

I would like again to say a special thank you to Vinay for his taking up a whole weekend escorting us around Mysore and making Akira’s time there special. And you did get your “low five” out of Taiga at last!

And of course many thanks to Vasantha for inviting us to your home last weekend and treating us to some great Indian home cooking. It was also a treat to see our first major Hindu temple, the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) in Bangalore. This is their biggest temple complex in the world, and if you still don’t get it, they are the people in orange who dance and chant to the Hindu god Krishna (Hare Krishna!).

It has been an incredible stay and we would love to return sometime! We certainly all feel sad that we are having to make our last goodbyes :-( .

A little luxury in Bangalore

September 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

A comfortable twenty minute drive takes us from Ulsoor to Kodihalli, where our destination awaits – The Leela Palace at 23 Airport Road, BANGALORE 560008 (+91 80 2521 1234). The Leela is a 5 star business hotel for which the term opulent is a tad of an understatement. For locals with a paunch and a little cash tucked away beneath it, Sunday is most decidedly brunch at the Citrus Lounge.

Bangalore is a big sprawling city. One of its main centres is MG Road (Mahatma Gandhi!). We are lucky to be just east of this, MG leads straight to Old Madras Road, off which is Cambridge Road where we are staying.

Ok, so the links will give you an idea of the stateliness of the Leela’s outside, but let’s look inside. The entrance area is imposing, beautifully carved pillars, but my son has it sussed, for him it was a wonderfully huge play area.

[Normally I don't upload high resolution images but this place deserves them, so please click on any pictures that interest you - they'll be in a more appealing 1600 x 1200 pixels]

Our driver dropped us at the main entrance where we are greeted by a colourful line-up of staff, and I am suddenly thrown into what I can only imagine to be the hey day of The British Empire (though to be technically correct I believe it is actually the Vijaynagar empire ;-)

We arrived a little early (brunch starts at 12.00) but I do recommend just that, so that one can take in the grounds whilst one is still capable of walking unassisted – brunch is an all you can eat affair, and Sparkling Wine (damn you French for stealing our linguistic heritage and joie de vivre – it’s Champagne) is on tap, and all prix fixe :-)

Well the grounds are indeed delightful, and maybe only pictures can evoke the beauty within.

I recommend that if you ever visit Bangalore then come here at least once, you will not regret it. The place as you can see is lovely. The food was truly amazing. It is almost midnight as I type this and I am still not hungry (but I am sober ;-) The waiter service was impeccable, they tended to us and our children with equal aplomb (parents you will understand this. Ok, look at a dictionary and then you will understand this ;-)

I invite you to put yourself in this picture and complete your own story.

THE BILL: we dropped 4500 rupees (A$120) for a family of 4 and we would do it again at the drop of a hat.

ADDENDUM: that price was for two adults (IR2250 a head), children are free. Free but not forgotten, the children are specifically addressed, having their own Lilliputian buffet area! Attention to detail gets 10/10.

Fit for a prince!
